Tool Steel T10 & AISI 1095
Steel T10 and AISI 1095 are among the highest quality materials used in the production of samurai swords. It’s no wonder that collectors and warriors often request katanas made from this steel. T10 & AISI 1095 steel undergoes traditional forging processes, heat treatment, clay tempering, oil quenching, and water quenching. T-10 & AISI 1095 steel is an alloy of carbon steel and tungsten. Thanks to the added tungsten, it is resistant to scratching. A blade made from T10 & AISI 1095 steel is exceptionally tough; although it is tool steel, its properties can be compared to tamahagane and other high-quality steels currently on the market. T10 and 1095 steel are essentially indistinguishable, and a research laboratory would be needed to discern the difference. However, T10 is a slightly purer steel than AISI 1095.
T10 & AISI1095 steel is a very specific material. It consists of a tungsten alloy combined with a high concentration of carbon and a small admixture of silicon. During the forging process, this steel needs to be preheated to a temperature reaching 600°C and then increased to 800°C. The heating process is slow to prevent any loss of carbon. It is essential that this temperature be this high for at least 30 minutes. Then water cooling is necessary. The hardening process begins at higher temperatures around 800°C.
