A Tanto 短刀 is a Japanese knife that a samurai wore together with a wakizashi and a katana in a set (daishō). The blade length for this type should not exceed 30.3 cm. The tanto was designed for forceful handling and its geometry is similar to the style of Japanese long and short swords. The tanto has a high blade. This dagger could be carried by common people for their protection, while the katana could only be worn by samurai.
