Product detailed description

Miniature Higonokami knife with brass handle

The Higonokami is a fully functional, handmade, miniature knife with a sharp blade made of Japanese carbon SK-5 steel and a brass handle. The production of Higonokami knives dates back to the 19th century, to the Meiji era. This makes these knives excellent collectible items for lovers of Japanese tradition and history. The knife was made by the Japanese company Sekiryu Japan.

Quality without compromise

Higonokami knife parameters:

Total length: 90mm
Blade length: 38 mm
Weight: 14 g

In 1896, the wholesaler Tasaburo Shigematsu and the blacksmith Teji Murakami in Miki City agreed on the production of these knives. Higonokami were known and carried by everyone – Japanese craftsmen and people for everyday use. It is a knife without a classic lock, where the blade in the open position is held by thumb pressure on the lever (chikiri).

The blade is made of high carbon SK-5 steel, which is extremely sharp after sharpening. A compact, lightweight, and historically rich folding knife, the Higonokami is not just a tool – it's a cultural artifact suitable for outdoor enthusiasts and collectors. Carry a piece of Japanese heritage with you daily, where every cut tells a story of craftsmanship.

Péče o japonský nůž

Care principles:

  • •Never wash the knife in the dishwasher.
  • •After use, wipe the knife and keep it dry (carbon steel can corrode).
  • •Occasionally lubricate the blade with oil.

Sharpening Japanese Steel

For blades made of SK-5 steel, we recommend water sharpening stones. If you are unsure, we will be happy to sharpen the knife for you individually. We also regularly organize sharpening courses.

Carbon Steel Maintenance:

SK-5 carbon steel is not stainless. Moisture particles can create rust-like spots. To remove them, use a paste of baking soda and a cork. Proper patina is, however, a sign of use and history for these knives.

Notice

This is a handmade product. Each piece of the brass handle and blade may bear traces of manual processing, which adds to the knife's authenticity.

We guarantee an excellent product that will serve you for many years. Ideal as a wise gift solution for lovers of Japan.

Higonokami: Japanese heritage in your pocket

Higonokami knives by Sekiryu represent the finest elements of Japanese knife-making tradition. Their construction is fascinating in its simplicity while offering surprising performance and durability:

  • High-quality steel blades: Sekiryu uses traditional Japanese techniques to achieve exceptional sharpness. Many models feature a layered construction with a hard core and tougher outer layers.
  • Iconic "Chikiri" opening: The knife does not have a conventional lock but is operated via a characteristic lever on the blade, which the user holds with the thumb during use. This system is safe, reliable, and mechanically durable.
  • Distinctive brass handle: The traditional handle is made from a folded metal sheet, most commonly brass, which develops a unique patina over time and tells the story of its owner.
  • Versatile everyday tool: Despite its historical appearance, the Higonokami is a perfect EDC knife for daily tasks—from sharpening pencils to preparing light snacks outdoors.

The uniqueness of Seki knife-making tradition

The city of Seki, home of Sekiryu, has been a cradle of Japanese blade-making since the samurai era. Local masters transformed sword-making techniques into compact and practical tools. Japanese knife-making differs from Western approaches mainly through its focus on blade geometry and extreme cutting performance. Sekiryu Higonokami knives prove that even the simplest tool can be a masterpiece when crafted with respect for material and tradition.

Who is the Higonokami knife for?

Thanks to their unique aesthetics and historical significance, these knives are sought after by collectors, enthusiasts of Japanese culture, and users who prefer mechanical simplicity without springs or locking mechanisms. Higonokami is a knife with character, connecting you to generations of Japanese craftsmen.

Maintenance tip: As these knives are often made from carbon steel to achieve maximum sharpness, we recommend wiping the blade after each use and occasionally treating it with knife oil. This helps prevent corrosion and preserves your piece of history in perfect condition.

Choose your Sekiryu Higonokami knife and rely on a tool that has stood the test of time in Japan. We offer various sizes and designs, all in stock and ready for immediate delivery—straight into your pocket or collection.
