Care principles:

  • •Never wash the knife in the dishwasher.
  • •After use, wash the knife by hand and dry it immediately to prevent corrosion of the carbon steel.
  • •Do not use the knife as a crowbar or screwdriver.

Sharpening a bushcraft knife

For SK-5 steel, we recommend using water sharpening stones. If you are not sure about your skills, we offer individual knife sharpening and regular sharpening courses. Carbon steel will reward you with uncompromising sharpness for your care.

Cleaning Outdoor Knife:

Particles attached to the blade surface can begin to corrode. Baking soda mixed with water and an old cork stopper is commonly used to remove them. Regular oiling of the blade is recommended for carbon steel.

Notice

The knife is made from natural materials and is hand-forged. Each piece is unique, so your knife may differ slightly from the photograph, which is a sign of authenticity for handmade items.

Higonokami: Japanese heritage in your pocket

Higonokami knives by Sekiryu represent the finest elements of Japanese knife-making tradition. Their construction is fascinating in its simplicity while offering surprising performance and durability:

  • High-quality steel blades: Sekiryu uses traditional Japanese techniques to achieve exceptional sharpness. Many models feature a layered construction with a hard core and tougher outer layers.
  • Iconic "Chikiri" opening: The knife does not have a conventional lock but is operated via a characteristic lever on the blade, which the user holds with the thumb during use. This system is safe, reliable, and mechanically durable.
  • Distinctive brass handle: The traditional handle is made from a folded metal sheet, most commonly brass, which develops a unique patina over time and tells the story of its owner.
  • Versatile everyday tool: Despite its historical appearance, the Higonokami is a perfect EDC knife for daily tasks—from sharpening pencils to preparing light snacks outdoors.

The uniqueness of Seki knife-making tradition

The city of Seki, home of Sekiryu, has been a cradle of Japanese blade-making since the samurai era. Local masters transformed sword-making techniques into compact and practical tools. Japanese knife-making differs from Western approaches mainly through its focus on blade geometry and extreme cutting performance. Sekiryu Higonokami knives prove that even the simplest tool can be a masterpiece when crafted with respect for material and tradition.

Who is the Higonokami knife for?

Thanks to their unique aesthetics and historical significance, these knives are sought after by collectors, enthusiasts of Japanese culture, and users who prefer mechanical simplicity without springs or locking mechanisms. Higonokami is a knife with character, connecting you to generations of Japanese craftsmen.

Maintenance tip: As these knives are often made from carbon steel to achieve maximum sharpness, we recommend wiping the blade after each use and occasionally treating it with knife oil. This helps prevent corrosion and preserves your piece of history in perfect condition.

Choose your Sekiryu Higonokami knife and rely on a tool that has stood the test of time in Japan. We offer various sizes and designs, all in stock and ready for immediate delivery—straight into your pocket or collection.
