Koshirae is a traditional set of components for a samurai sword, combining functionality with aesthetics. Kashira and Fuchi are components of the tsuka (handle) of a samurai sword. They are found at the end of the handle - the Kashira finishes the sword, and the Fuchi is located in front of the tsuba (guard). It is said that the first Japanese sword was made around 700 AD, and its ownership initially determined social class affiliation, only later becoming a military tool. It also became a daily necessity for samurai, who carried it with them at all times. It was believed that the warrior's soul was hidden within the sword, and losing the sword meant losing the right to live.
