steel 154 CM

Steel 154CM has not been on the market for very long. It was developed for aerospace applications. It first appeared in the 1950's and was soon used for knives and cutlery. Today, this steel is very popular and is considered a solid choice for kitchen and outdoor knives. 154CM steel was developed in the United States in 1959 by Crucible Industries, a company known for producing high-quality steel for aerospace, automotive and industrial applications.

The name 154CM refers to the composition of the metal: 15% chromium and 4% molybdenum. It has a similar structure and properties to the better known 440C stainless steel. According to Crucible Industries, the hardness of 154CM steel can be between 60 and 61 HRC. This is a very impressive value that puts this metal in the same league as knives made from high quality carbon steel. Due to the high carbon content of 154CM steel, blades made from this metal have good wear resistance. Such a blade also has good stiffness, so it is unlikely to bend during use.

However, due to the excellent edge retention, it is a little more difficult to sharpen a blade made of 154CM. The carbon, silicon and manganese in the structure of the metal increase its hardness. If you already have some experience with sharpening, you will have no problem with 154CM steel.

For knife makers, 154CM offers better blade retention than 440C and allows them to produce high-quality, long-lasting knives. It also has a higher achievable hardness and better penetration properties than 440C, giving it longer life and greater sharpness.
