.

Fully functional Japanese Higonokami knife will please not only every collector. It is fully functional and usable in everyday life. The owner will find it a practical helper for everyday use. The story of this legendary knife begins in 1896. At that time, the wholesaler Tasaburo Shigematsu arranged for its production with the blacksmith Teji Murakami of Hirata, in the town of Miki in Hoygo Prefecture. This was the first time this famous knife saw the light of day, whose main advantage was its simplicity and accessibility. It was Teji Murakami who is said to have invented the characteristic lever (tail) on the blade called. Chikiri. Thanks to which the knife was easy to open and at the same time held firmly in the open position. This is when the name "Higonokami" was coined. In fact, a large portion of Shigematsi's customers were in the Kumamoto area (formally known as Higo).Higo no Kami means "Lord of Higo" in Japanese and is also a noble title historically given to strong samurai. This move proved to be a good idea and the knife started to sell better.

In 1899, the "Higonokami Knife Union" was founded. In its heyday, it had over 40 member companies with over 200 employees. Its affordability, simplicity and excellent sharpness have made it the most popular pocket knife in Japan. The children carried it to school in their bags. There were even pencil sharpening competitions back then, which he was often used for. It was commonly used by many Japanese for everyday activities. No wonder, because the knife is compact, practical and easy to sharpen. Over time, however, many low-quality imitations were supplied to the market, causing considerable problems. That is why the trademark Higonokami was created in 1910. Thus, the use of the brand was limited only to members of the Miki Knife Association, guaranteeing its quality. As an interesting fact, in 1911 at the first Kobe Fair, Higonokami was purchased by the Japanese Crown Prince and later Emperor Taisho. It is said that he was so popular that it also helped to spread his fame.
The production of the knife continued unabated by the lack of raw materials during the Second World War and the subsequent US occupation. The Americans banned the production of swords and many blacksmiths started to make knives, but also for example forged garden tools. The developing industry, however, gradually began to suppress the production of this knife. Other utility knives and an electric pencil sharpener were introduced to the market. Higonokami knives thus began to dwindle among the people. The final straw was a strong social campaign against carrying knives into schools in 1961, due to the murder of a politician by a mentally disturbed 17-year-old. Subsequently, harsh laws were passed and Higonokami almost disappeared. Many registered producers have changed jobs or quit altogether. The only one that has maintained production so far and can use the trademark "Higonokami" is the Nagao Kanakoma Factory. Higonokami's fame was almost lost and the knife survived only thanks to its admirers and people who still bought it out of nostalgia from their childhood. Unfortunately, many young Japanese today are not familiar with this knife at all. However, it must be said that its popularity is returning and it is sought after and sold all over the world. The only original manufacturer with the right to use the trademark Higonokami, (incidentally one of the oldest trademarks in Japan), is the aforementioned Nagao Kanakoma Factory. Their knives come in small blue and gold cardboard boxes and are only made in the Kanekoma workshops of Mr. Mitsuo Nagao, who is now in his fifth generation of manufacturing. Higonokami knives are forged by hand from "sandwich" Warikomi. Such a blade is made up of three layers. One steel core of high quality, high hardness steel and two plates of softer iron on either side of the core. Aogami White Paper steel, Blue Paper or SK steel and also premium steels with a beautiful damascus pattern are used for the core.
Blades have historically changed their shape. At first, they resembled a bamboo leaf of the Bamboo type. Then the classic sharp bevel of the tip. However, there are also Sword type knives available, resembling the tip of the so-called. Kissaki swords katana. All knives have a V-shaped blade cross-section. The grinding is always done on both sides. The handle is made by bending brass or painted sheet metal. They are then decorated with Kanji script, but also with portraits, images of horses, flowers, birds or landscapes.
