Brass Habaki for Japanese Samurai Sword Katana and Wakizashi
Code: MK-02Product detailed description
Habaki
.
Habaki (鎺) is a piece of metal that encircles the blade of a Japanese sword. It has a dual purpose: it provides tsuba (guard) and keeps the weapon sheathed (saya). Habaki will be used to draw the katana from its scabbard. It is pulled out by grasping the sheath near the top and pressing the guard with the thumb so that the blade emerges sufficiently that the habaki slides out of the inside of the sheath. The loosened blade can then be pulled out of the saya very quickly. This is, of course, an extremely aggressive gesture, as a fatal cut or slash can occur in a split second. It is similar in meaning and effect to pulling the trigger on a gun.
The expression "tanka o kiru" is widely used in Japan today to mean "to prepare to start something" or "to prepare to speak", especially with aggressive connotations. Habaki causes normal wear and tear inside the sheath - which can then be lined or replaced. Habaki should be removed and lubricated after each mowing or once in a while.
